Turning Stone Resort Verona NY
This week was quite busy, but a ton of fun. Mark got us a camp site at the Turning Stone RV park and he had tickets to Roger Daltrey!
Tuesday evening Carol and I went out to the Casino had a nice dinner at the food court, lost some money on the slots and spent the later part of the evening enjoying classic Who songs.
Roger was simply amazing. He was so playful on stage, he was silly when he forgot the lyrics to Athena, and serious when he had to take a ballad twice to hit the pitch note. Apparently he is going deaf. Surprised? After 50+ years of Rock and Roll, no wonder. Did you know he is 74 years young. 74 and he still looks good. Not only does he look great for a grandfather...(Or even great) he still can belt one out. His singing was amazing.
Carol and I finding our seats. We so do not look like we are nearly 50 years old do we? We even discussed this while waiting for the show to begin.
We had great seats, So I went a little CRAZY with the photos. Please bear with me.
I wish I could remember all the songs that he played. There were of course some Who songs that we all know and love, but there were also some of his solo songs that I really had not heard before. There were even some from the 70s that he did solo. I really do not know the history of the band.
I simply know the music and saw "TOMMY" about 30 times.
I believe that the first song was See Me....Feel ME.....touch ME.....
The guitarist is clearly not Pete Townsend, but guess what? Its his brother. Wow!! Simon Townsend is the baby brother of Pete.
...he has got the tunes down. He even did a song that Roger reported that Pete would not play live. Its a song we have heard often. Perhaps it was Can't Explain...but I can't remember,,,,,,
They played some of the great ones. Behind blue eyes. Miles and Miles....
Every picture of Roger was illuminated. Even when Carol tried to take a picture he glowed. Is it just the white shirt or is this some weird "GOD/angel" like phenomenon?
It was truly an amazing show.
As you can tell from the pictures Roger continues to animate the stage. He even did his signature microphone swing a few times and joked about hitting some one in the head at the stage level.
Baba O'riley.....
He was very comical throughout the evening, He messed up the lyrics to Athena twice, and had the band re-start until he had to sit down and think the words through, He had joked about having to use an app to remember lyrics he had developed in his own head.
They really put their heart into the performance. Its incredible to see him keep going after all these years. He did discuss that he has some hearing problems as a result of all those years of Rock and Roll! You can see his hearing aids (?)in this picture.
The did Pinball Wizard too.
I'm not positive, but google reports that current band members include Zak Stsrkey (dummer) the son of Ringo Starr and God-son of Keith Moon. I'm not sure if this is actually Zac as Roger did not introduce him (that I recall).
The last son of the evening was a solo by Roger that I had not heard. He identified it as a spiritual song. He had only his voice and a cello (I think this is that big instrument). He had a large scale of notes to run, and he did crack, but he sang it again until he got it perfect. For a 74 near deaf old man he sure kicked it!!!! And did I mention HE STILL LOOKS GOOD TOO??? I was waiting for the shirt to come off.
This picture says it best! Still has that smile!!!
